Bishop Rejects and Condemns President’s
Constitutional Amendment Proposal on Marriage
Bishop James Wilkowski of the Evangelical Catholic Diocese of the Northwest rejects and condemns President Bush’s call for a Constitutional Amendment limiting the rights of citizens to enter into marriage.
The bishop regards the timing of the President’s statement as a political ploy to divert attention away from the many problems and criticisms plaguing his administration.
“It is morally wrong to engage, to use and exploit a minority segment of American society to pander to one’s perceived political base.” The bishop also believes that “to victimize and incite possible harm to the gay and lesbian community for a political publicity stunt is akin to the policy of the Nazi party of profiling and scapegoating.” To engage in this activity is counter to the tenants of Catholicism and of all other faith jurisdiction and must be condemned.
This Catholic jurisdiction remains committed to welcoming gender-common couples as candidates for the Sacrament of Marriage and to speak out on behalf of those who are being put at risk of being socially and pastorally marginalized.
